EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
