Seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
